The Future Settlement Layer Is Blockchain, Says Economist Massimo Morini

December 14, 2022

Massimo Morini, chief economist at The Algorand Foundation, joins Jack Farley to share his views on blockchain, finality, and collateralization. Citing as examples the 2008 Great Financial Crisis (GFC) and the European debt crisis of the 2010s, Morini explains how misunderstanding of credit risk has in the past imposed tremendous losses on the traditional financial system. He argues that blockchain can help mitigate credit risk by providing real-time settlement finality and automatic collateral transmission. Morini tells Farley why he chose Algorand specifically, and shares his thoughts on the stunning collapse of FTX, which was up until recently one of the largest centralized cryptocurrency exchanges. Filmed on November 29, 2022, at Algorand’s Decipher 2022 conference.
